Not every AI 3D model is an engineering CAD model
Text-to-3D and image-to-3D products can accelerate concept visualization. Their meshes are not automatically dimensionally controlled solids suitable for tooling, tolerance analysis or production drawings. Engineering CAD applications instead prioritize constrained geometry, assemblies, dimensions and design history.

- Website artwork or a game asset: a textured mesh may be enough.
- 3D printing: inspect watertight geometry, wall thickness, scale and printer requirements.
- Precision optics, CNC or fixtures: require controlled units, exact surfaces, tolerances, compatible CAD/CAM export and formal verification.
Engineering verification checklist
Confirm model units, origin and coordinate axes; check surface continuity, self-intersections, wall thickness, clearances and manufacturing constraints. For machine programming, simulate the toolpath, validate collision envelopes and require controlled sign-off before machining. Never run unvalidated AI-generated toolpaths on production machines.
Questions to ask providers
Does it export STEP/Parasolid solids or only OBJ/GLB/STL meshes? Are dimensions parametric or inferred? Can the geometry be edited without remodeling? What rights apply to uploaded customer designs? Are generated assets commercially usable under the current terms?
