Hole and Shaft Fits & Tolerances Calculator

Compare the limiting diameters of a hole and mating shaft to understand whether a fit always has clearance, always interferes, or crosses a transition zone. Use dimensional limits from a verified drawing or properly licensed standard.

How to use this tool

  • Enter minimum and maximum acceptable hole diameters.
  • Enter minimum and maximum acceptable shaft diameters.
  • Calculate the limiting assembly clearances and fit classification.
  • Assess assembly temperature, surface finish and design loads separately.

Calculation method and formula

Minimum clearance = minimum hole diameter − maximum shaft diameter. Maximum clearance = maximum hole diameter − minimum shaft diameter.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Hole 20.000–20.021 mm and shaft 19.980–19.993 mm produce 0.007 mm minimum clearance and 0.041 mm maximum clearance: a clearance fit.

What the calculation does not cover

  • This tool does not reproduce copyrighted ISO 286 grade/deviation tables or infer an H7/g6 fit designation.
  • Diameter limits alone do not guarantee assembleability, temperature compensation, coatings or adequate running clearance.
  • Verify all limits against authorized engineering drawings and design standards.

Common questions

Can it calculate H7/g6 directly?

Not from a class name in this version. Enter the verified minimum and maximum diameters from an authorized drawing or standards source.

What does a negative clearance mean?

It represents interference: the shaft is larger than the hole at the corresponding limit.
